Many episodes of Black Mirror have video game elements to them, but this one was entirely focused on the evolution of VR (well, AR) into something strange and terrifying. The end goal is to turn on the Twitter trolls who would be so callous as to use that hashtag, and eventually the bees go after them, killing thousands countrywide. But it’s all a honeypot (pun perfectly intended). At first, the bees are linked to a hashtag where the public essentially votes on who they want to die (someone who has been publicly shamed, a journalist writing an insensitive story, a tourist disrespecting a war memorial) and the bees deliver. The result is extremely cumbersome, a hacker who controllers an army of synthetic bees, originally created to solve the disappearing honeybee problem, but weaponized into killers that can bore their way into victim’s brains. This is fully evident in “Hated in the Nation,” a bloated episode at 90 minutes when every other entry is just an hour, and one that picks a relevant “topic,” in this case, online harassment and Twitter trolls, and creates a bizarre tech angle around it. We will keep you updated about a possible season 6 of Black Mirror as more news comes.A common complaint I have about this season is that it seems less about taking aspects of technology to their logical, terrifying ends, and more about finding an “issue” and then putting some tech twist on it. But the good news is that Netflix has not canceled the series-yet, at least! Very cryptic! I agree that the mind-bending dynamic of Black Mirror might be a little too meta in the current times.

I’m sort of keen to revisit my comic skill set, so I’ve been writing scripts aimed at making myself laugh. At the moment, I don’t know what stomach there would be for stories about societies falling apart, so I’m not working away on one of those. I don’t know what I can say about what I’m doing and not doing.
